TOUR DESCRIPTION & ITINERARY

6 Days Gorilla tracking and Wildlife Safari Rwanda features two main Rwanda safari destinations namely the Volcanoes National Park and the Akagera National Park. The Safari incorporates gorilla trekking, golden monkey tracking, the tour twin lakes of Ruhondo and Bulera, the Musaze Caves exploration, the wild game viewing including the lions, elephants, the Buffaloes, the Topis, the elands, the Masaai Giraffe, the Roan Antelope along with aquatics like the Nile crocodiles, the Hippos, water dwelling birds like the shoe bill stork and Papyrus gonolecks explored on the boat cruise on Lake Ihema.

Day 1: Arrive in Rwanda (Kigali International Airport) & transfer to Volcanoes National Park

Arrive in Rwanda at her main entry point Kigali International Airport where you are welcomed by the company representative who will brief you about the country and the safari in particular before embarking on the transfer to Ruhengeri where the Rwanda gorilla safari haven of Volcanoes National Park is located 116km about 2 – 3 hours’ drive arriving in the evening for relaxation, dinner and overnight.

Day 2: Do gorilla trekking & twin lakes walk

After your breakfast, start your Rwanda gorilla tracking safari by driving to the headquarters for briefing by park officials at 8am and after enter into the jungle to search for the shy endangered Mountain gorillas in Rwanda. Requirements like firm walking shoes, hut, insect repellent, sun screen, rain gears, packed lunch and bottled water are a must plus other tools that one may need once in the tropical rain forest. The gorilla trekking experience in Volcanoes is beyond gorilla alone. The sights of the Volcanic Mountains that stretch from Congo through Rwanda to Uganda, the verdant green vegetation that shelter their slopes, the counts of birds along with fauna like duikers and buffaloes combine to generate lasting safari memories. The Gorilla trekking safari activity tends to last from 2 hours to 8 hours or more depending on the day’s gorilla movement. The one hour of direct encounter with the gorillas brings you closer to these ancient apes, look into their eyes and their gigantic structure which makes them most powerful of all apes. Encounter them forage and play before retreating to the lodge for relaxation. In the evening, you embark on the twin lakes walk exploring the impressive views of Lake Ruhondo and Lake Bulera and the local fishing activity before retiring for dinner and overnight.

Day 3: Do golden monkey tracking & Musaze Caves walk

After breakfast, you embark on the Golden monkey tracking commencing at 7am from Kinigi Park headquarters with any number of people that will be available. You head to the trail head and embark on the search for the golden monkeys that tend to dwell in the Bamboo Zone. The golden monkey tracking experience tends to last 4 hours and this includes one full hour on direct viewing. It is an exciting experience as you explore this golden backed monkeys jumping from stem to stem of the Bamboo and playing hide and seek games. You retreat from the activity and you embark on the Musaze Caves walk to explore the historic caves of Musaze that were formed 65million years ago by the basalt lava flow from the Volcanic Mountains of Sabyinyo and Bisoke. The caves feature 31 entrances and stretch to 2km inside. The cave exploration lasts 2 hours walking underground but with the company of the soldier to offer you protection. The caves provided refigium to people in times of war in the pre-colonial Rwanda and even in the 1994 Rwanda genocide. Retire for relaxation, dinner and overnight.

Day 4: Transfer to Akagera National Park. Make a lunch stop in Kigali city

After breakfast, embark on the transfer to Akagera National Park. You drive through impressive countryside landscapes of Rwanda before making a stop in Kigali for lunch. After lunch, you proceed to Akagera National Park 135km around 2 ½ drive passing through amazing countryside landscapes including the areas of Rwamagana where you have chances of encountering the inyambo cows. You arrive in Akagera National Park in the evening for relaxation, dinner and overnight.

Day 5: Do game drive / wild game viewing in the morning & afternoon boat cruise on Lake Ihema

After a morning cup of coffee, embark on the thrilling game drive encounter in the savannah landscapes of Akagera National Park. The Akagera National Park features a range of wild game including elephants, masaai giraffes, buffaloes, Impala, water bucks, bushbucks, Oribi, eland, reedbuck, roan antelope, lions, leopards among other wild game are present in the park and might be encountered on the game drive. You retreat from 3 – 4 hour encounter and get to the lodge for relaxation and lunch after which you connect to Lake Ihema for an afternoon boat cruise. Lake Ihema is the second largest lake in Rwanda inhabited by Hippos and Nile crocodile and counts of birds. Thus the boat cruise on this lake presents a memorable encounter on the Rwanda safari. Retire for relaxation, dinner and overnight.

Day 6: Transfer back to Kigali, visit the Kigali genocide memorial & depart

After a relaxed breakfast, embark on the transfer back to Kigali City and upon arrival, you undertake the tour of the genocide memorial. The tour to Kigali genocide memorial also located in Gisozi allows you to pay tribute to the counts of Rwandese that lost their lives in the bloody genocide that befell Rwanda in 1994 where a great number of the Tutsis and the moderate Hutus lost their life. Retire from the encounter to mark the end of the safari
